You’ve purchased your brand new document camera off the internet, you’ve waited patiently for delivery, you get it hooked up and configured, and — wait, why is everything backward? Wondering why this is happening? You’re not alone. Don’t worry, read on for a full explanation as to why this is happening and what you can do to resolve it.
Even though it can seem unusual and unnecessary that while video conferencing, the video in your preview window is mirrored, there is an explanation for it, and it is not a fault with your OKIOCAM. Video conferencing applications do this because, in general, it is easier to adjust your position in the frame and it is more natural to view yourself mirrored (like how your reflection looks back at you in a mirror). Most video conferencing applications will mirror your camera in the preview window by default. However, anybody who you are transmitting your video to will see the non-mirrored video.
Although only you see the mirrored video, it can still be annoying to have to view the video in your preview window this way — especially if you use your OKIOCAM to display a lot of written documents. Fortunately, for those of you who are bothered by viewing mirrored video, there are solutions.
Solution #1: Use Zoom or Cisco Webex Meetings
Both Zoom and Cisco Webex Meetings give users the option to turn off video mirroring.
Solution #2: Use Google Meet with the OKIOLABS Mirror Image Corrector Chrome extension.
We have released a new Chrome Extension that helps Google Meet users resolve the mirrored image problem.
Solution #3: OKIOCAM Snapshot and Recorder & Screen Sharing
OKIOCAM Snapshot and Recorder does not mirror video in the preview window. Therefore, if your chosen video conferencing application supports screen sharing, you can share the non-mirrored video displayed in OKIOCAM Snapshot and Recorder.
While we provide instructions for how to screen share using Google Meet, Skype, and Microsoft Teams, the steps will be similar for other video conferencing applications.
For instructions on how to install OKIOCAM Snapshot and Recorder, please download the OKIOCAM Snapshot and Recorder Installation & Navigation guide from here.
